The news that Rolex is raising prices by 7% in the UK should come as no surprise to anyone.
Inflation is surging globally, affecting everything from energy prices to wages and material costs.
Combined with the depreciation of the pound against the Swiss franc, which has pushed up import prices; and against the dollar, which has created price differences between major markets, with the United States or any other country whose currency is pegged to or tracks the dollar (including oil It is cheaper to buy in this country compared to resource rich Middle East countries. If the UK government reinstates the instant VAT refunds non-EU shoppers used to get, we could see a flood of high-spending tourists snapping up bargains in the summer due to the fall in the value of the pound.
Instead, I’ve been crunching some numbers on the closing of the Rolex price gap between authorized dealers and the secondary market.
Since the first quarter, I’ve extensively reported on the precipitous drop in secondary market prices for Rolex’s most popular steel tool watches and APs, as well as Patek Philippe watches.
The trend continues, with data from used watch specialist Subdial showing a 2.8% drop in fake Rolex prices over the past 30 days, meaning the difference between retail and market prices has been narrowing.
For the GMT Master II Ref. 126710BLRO (a steel watch with a Pepsi dial), the difference has narrowed from around £14,000 in March this year to £8,734 today.
Based on anecdotal evidence, my opinion is that Subial is overpriced, so the delta may be narrower, but the trend is instructive.
The steel Patek Philippe GMT is red, and the waiting list is long (or a watch of intent, as the Swiss watch company recently renamed it).

According to Subdial, today’s secondary market price has dropped to £10,743, while authorised dealers are priced at £8,450, a difference of just £2,293. If Subdial’s price is on the high side, this gap may disappear.
A spokesperson confirmed to WATCH PRO today that the same goes for Patek Philippe, which retails in the UK and EU for about 5% higher on September 1.
If you do want to sell any of the replica watches we see here, you’ll get at least 20% off the price as a trade-in or sell it to a used specialist like Watchfinder or Watchmaster.
These price drops are a welcome sign that sanity is returning to the secondary market, and that speculators in droves and those who have been bullying authorized dealer salespeople might as well find better things to do.
It is a good feeling for a watch lover if the imitation Rolex or Patek Philippe product that a watch lover buys retains its value and even rises slowly over time. Still, the recent shortages and speculation have created a more unpleasant atmosphere around these brands and their retailers.
The rebalancing is long overdue, and I hope the market finds a happy balance that rewards watch lovers, not speculators.
